Actually it's a lot different now - the desperation ("we're desperate/get used to it") has been a constant since at least the time of Nathaniel West, but the wearing-down exhaustion, the overwhelming quality of the landscape: that's relatively new, historically speaking. There was a time when the desperation came with a comforting sidecar of languor.
